The Colonial Inn is located in the heart of the Catskill forest preserve. There are 36 high peaks over 3,500' elevation. The preserve encompasses 287 thousand acres and contains both wild forest and wilderness. The N.Y.S. DEC maintains a network of 300 miles of marked trails. Besides the state marked trails, there are countless other trails that were created to remove stone from quarry's that once were used for New York City sidewalks in the 1800's. Numerous old logging and fire trails are abundant and accessible to hikers. Bushwacking is always the best way to discover the areas wildlife and find places that are truly remote. The Pine Hill trail which climbs the Belleayre mountain starts behind the Colonial Inn and connects to the Big Indian wilderness area and to Slide Mountain which is the highest peak in the Catskills.
